Parts of objects

In science we worked on parts of objects. I asked the class to pick something in the room to draw and point to the different parts of the object they chose. They labeled the parts the best they could.

Letter W

For the letter W the students colored, cut, and glued a whale onto the W.

Letter Z

For the letter Z I had a traced Z already on the paper. All the students had to do was color in a zebra, cut it out, and glue it on the Z.

Letter K

For the letter K, I precut 2 different kinds of keys. Each student colored and cut out their own K and glued it on the construction paper. They could glue their keys anywhere they wanted on top of the K.

St. Patricks day

St. Patricks day centers:
Sight word rainbow- each student picked a word from the sight word pile and wrote that word in red in the top part of the rainbow. They did this for each color of the rainbow.

To continue with the rainbow theme, we made pots of gold with a paper chain made out of the rainbow colors.

To practice number recognition everyone got a blank 100 chart. I would call out numbers for each color. Hopefully at the end each student should have a rainbow and pot of gold.

We made a stick puppet of St. Patrick.

This is a worksheet to review word families.

St. Party's day craft. Could use the orange part for the hair for the girls or as a beard for the boys.

For another teen number recognition center I made shamrocks with teen numbers in them. The had to use paint dotters to along with the color code to color them. At the bottom of e paper they had to write how many shamrocks of each color there were.

This center was an all about me rainbow. Each student had to color the rainbow according to the instructions. The order is favorite color, hair color, eye color, shirt color, bedroom color, favorite toy color. Each rainbow came out very uniquely.

For out St. Patricks day snack each student was asked to bring in a green snack. Some snacks were green rice Krispy treats, mint m&ms, grapes, mint Oreos, etc...

The leprechauns came to our room when we weren't there! They left green footprints on the walls and knocked over our toys! At the end of the day they left us a pot of gold :)

Subtraction math center

To review subtraction I created this math center. Each group got 12 subtraction problems that they had to solve using bingo paint dotters.

SPLAT sight word game

My kids love to play SPLAT! It's a sight word review game. In the container I put sight words on separate index cards and fold them up. I also add 2 Splat cards. Each student takes turns picking a card. If they can read the word they keep the card, if not, they put the card back. If you draw a splat card, the person who drew the card has to put all of their cards back. Keep going until time is up. The person with the most cards wins.

100th day of school

100th day of school! We asked each student to create something that had 100 items on it. This student created a shirt with 100 jewels on it. Other examples were hats with 100 eyes on them, necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal or pasta on them, shirts with 100 stars on them.
Throughout the day we did various activities for 100 seconds, for example jumping jacks, hops on 1 foot, sit in silence, flap their wings...

We also made a 100th snack mix. Each student brought in 100 pieces of a certain snack (gold fish, Cheerios, marshmallows, skittles...) and we mixed them all up.

We discussed what kind of food could we eat 100 of. Some said cereal, fish sticks, meatballs...

Also today our puzzle we have been putting together since the first day of school was completed!

Letter V

For the letter V I printed out vegetable clip art for the students to color, cut, and paste onto their letter V.

Rereading

One lesson I did before independent reading was what to do after the students read their books. I found this on Pinterest. It's an anchor chart showing different techniques of rereading. You can sing it, act like a teacher, guess what's next, or make character voices. My kids love playing what's next when they reread.

Fancy words

Throughout the year we collect "Fancy Words" from the stories we read in class. We consider fancy words to be big words that we hardly use in daily conversation. We try to use them everyday in a sentence to keep them in our minds. I put a picture of the cover of the book we got the word from to help them remember the word.

Presidents' Day

For Presidents' Day I gave the students a paper to finish the sentence, "if I were president of the United States, I would..." After they finished the sentence, they drew a picture to go along with.
Here Re some examples of their answers.

We also did this craft where they connected 3 stars (red, white, and blue) and glued on top the silloette of Lincoln and Washington.

Addition

A way to help my students learn addition I have them use 2 colors to distinguish parts of the addition sentence. For their homework I underlined and filled in one part with green and underlined the blank part purple. The students knew to make the number given of green dots and then make how ever more needed purple dots to fill in the missing part. Having the 2 colors helped them to see the two parts needed to get the final answer.

Word wall stars

As a way to keep track of our word wall words, I've written them onto stars nd taped them to Popsicle sticks. I use them as flash cards during circle time to review. I also use them when we read out of big books. When we come to the word of the week we're working on, I have a student point to the word with the matching star. I also use these when playing musical sight words.

School helpers

To go over school helpers we created a list of all of the helpers in our school. I asked the students to pick their favorite helper and write how they help.

Letter U

For the letter U I gave out precut knives and spoons for the students to glue onto their U. I didn't have any forks so they drew their own.

Letter L

For our letter L paper I asked the students to color in the L to look like a tree and then they glued on precut leaves.

Heavy vs. Light

In science we talked about a scale and heavy vs. light. To reinforce this topic I gave the students precut parts of a scale and they cut out pictures from magazines and placed them on the scale accordingly.

Valentines Day unit

To start our conversation on Valentines Day we learned the sign language for I love you. I traced and cut out each students hand and glued down the appropriate fingers. The students wrote I love you and applied foam stickers.

As a quick valentine to make instead of a card I gave each student a blank heart to fill in with ripped up pieces of paper.

To help hold all of our goodies from our valentines party I give each student a white paper bag and a valentine picture for them to glue on. After they glue it on they get to decorate the rest of the bag however they want.

LEARNING CENTERS
In math center each student got to pick a heart which told them what color and how many dots to put inside the heart.
Another mt h center was to graph candy hearts by color. I gave each student 15 hearts and they sorted them by color and then filled in the graph.
In writing center the students had to finish the sentence "I love my..." 5 different times.

If I lived in a snow globe

To go along with all of the snow we've been having we discussed snow globes. We created a snow gobe scene with chalk and crayons and attached the writing prompt "if I lived in a snow globe."
